Benefits of Waterproof Concrete

Concrete is a fundamental building material that is regularly used across a wide range of applications.

From constructing buildings and other structures like bridges and roads, to being used to create necessary applications like kerbs, pipes, drains and more, there’s rarely a construction project in existence that will not use concrete in some way.

Furthermore, there is a wide range of concrete applications available, and it can sometimes be tricky to know what is best for your project.

At Concrete Supply UK, we act as local suppliers for domestic and commercial projects across the country, always taking a tailored approach to those we work with. Our expert team can provide people with a vast array of different concrete applications, including waterproof concrete.

In this article, we’ll explain the benefits of waterproof concrete and where it needs to be used.

Is concrete waterproof?

Normal concrete does have some waterproof properties, but it is not completely waterproof. This is because, unlike normal concrete applications, waterproof concrete is also damp-proof and watertight. This means that not only will moisture from the soil be prevented from getting through the concrete, but liquid water will also not be able to penetrate it.

Most concrete is naturally porous as a result of the various chemical reactions that take place during the curing process. This process sees water mixed with aggregates and as the mix begins to harden excess water is released. This means that the remaining mix is capable of absorbing significant amounts of water but dampness can occur as a result.

This dampness can then cause concrete to become damaged. As water flows into the concrete’s capillary systems, it can begin wearing the concrete away which in time can cause large holes to appear and erosion to occur. As time goes by, this erosion can cause cracks to occur which can be extremely damaging and costly to repair.

Water can also stain concrete which will negatively impact its appearance.

With this in mind, if you know the concrete is going to be used in places where moisture is more prevalent, then waterproof concrete should always be considered.

What is waterproof concrete used for?

Waterproof concrete, also sometimes referred to as water-resistant concrete, is used in a variety of applications where protection against water ingress is essential.

Some common projects where you’re likely to need waterproof concrete include:

  • Basements
  • Foundations
  • Swimming pools
  • Tunnels and underground structures
  • Bridges and marine structures
  • Dams and reservoirs
  • Water tanks
  • Sewage treatment plants
  • Roof decks and balconies
  • Roads

Benefits of waterproof concrete

As previously mentioned, waterproof concrete is also fully damp-proof and watertight, making it the perfect choice for projects where you need to be wary of moisture and water.

However, this is not the only advantage of using waterproof concrete.

In fact, waterproof concrete has a wide range of excellent benefits that make it a popular choice when constructing all kinds of applications.

These benefits include the following:

Resilience

One of the biggest advantages of using concrete of any type is that it is an extremely durable and robust material that provides unrivalled resilience.

With waterproof concrete, this property is further enhanced.

This is because where, in some instances, conventional concrete may break down over time if it has become permeated by moisture or erosion has set in, you never have to worry about this with waterproof concrete.

Instead, waterproof concrete is able to withstand the effects of moisture and enhance resilience across the entire structure.

Lower maintenance costs

In general, concrete is a low maintenance material that requires very little upkeep and can last for years to come. With waterproof concrete, this remains the case and in fact, can even involve lower maintenance costs when compared with conventional mixes.

As there is less erosion to deal with, far less maintenance is needed for waterproof concrete which can save people money on maintenance costs in the future.

Enhanced aesthetics

While concrete is often selected due to its functional benefits, with waterproof concrete aesthetics can also be enhanced.

This is because waterproof concrete will not deteriorate in the same way that normal concrete sometimes does. This means that no matter how many years have passed, it remains easy to keep a fresh, clean look across the application.

Furthermore, the risk of water staining is removed with waterproof concrete so you do not need to worry about this either.

Prevents damp, mould and mildew

Areas that suffer from excess moisture are more susceptible to mould, damp and mildew that can damage buildings and people’s health. Sometimes, erosion can cause these unpleasant things to occur, which occasionally happens with normal concrete applications.

However, with waterproof concrete, you don’t need to worry about this happening. It naturally combats damp, mould and mildew which saves money in the future and stops people from having to cope with such issues.

High-value structures

Waterproof concrete is a great choice for high-value structures.

Not only does the mix remove the need for any kind of maintenance in the future, but it also means that properties, where this concrete is used, can provide value from the very first moment that they are complete.

Having waterproof features, including waterproof subfloors, installed is often highly sought-after which means that these properties are likely to be more valuable.
